George clooney’s calling the shots, Kelly Osbourne’s bringing the noise, madonna’s getting dominated, eminem’s on an 8 mile high—yes, it’s elle’s annual hot list of pop-cultural highlights to watch for this fall.
1. The Playboy Club George Clooney and Sam Rockwell
There’s a scene in Charlie’s Angels where Sam Rockwell’s character reveals he’s not the mumbly by-golly kidnapping victim he purports to be, but a villain in pointy shoes. He lights a cigarette, downs some booze, and does a wicked little dance, sliding so seamlessly from cutie-pie to psycho that we remain intrigued—and, okay, attracted. Because when it comes to slightly scary sexy, Rockwell owns the school. Never mind that he was acting in a film that required a lot less. Rockwell can’t help himself: "Acting is the only thing I know how to do."

Now, fifteen years into a career in theater and indie films, the "I’m not famous, I’m familiar" Rockwell is making his leading-man debut—thanks to friend and fan George Clooney. Rockwell plays Gong Show host Chuck Barris in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Clooney’s first directorial effort, an adaptation of Barris’s memoir. The project was so hot that everyone from Sean Penn to Mike Myers was vying for the lead. "People don’t really go to bat for you in Hollywood," Rockwell says, "but George is a mensch."
With the film garnering Oscar buzz, Clooney’s insistence on Rockwell looks like genius. "Sam knocks this role out of the park. I’d be surprised if he didn’t get nominated," Clooney says. Reflexively self-deprecating, Rockwell responds, "It’s Clooney who should win, not me." The two bonded while filming next month’s Welcome to Collinwood, the latest ensemble produced by Clooney and can-do-no-wrong auteur Steven Soderbergh. "George taught me to be a leading man," Rockwell says. "I didn’t teach him anything, trust me," quips Clooney. Together, they sang karaoke, ate peanuts, and picked up women. "When you’re with George you’re in for a great time," Rockwell says. "I’m not sure I’ll ever be famous like he is, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t cool to imagine." "Would I do anything else with Sammy?" Clooney asks, laughing. "Nah. I’m sick of him. Get him the hell away from me, would ya?"
